Ten Counties. One Upstate. Stronger Together

Natural Beauty & Resources

Serving as reliable stewards of our natural environment and resources

JonesGap
Protecting the natural beauty of the Upstate ensures that future generations will be able to enjoy our region’s many diverse and environmentally critical natural assets.

We will maintain opportunities for residents to enjoy the parks, lakes, mountains and natural amenities of the Upstate and ensure that measures are put in place to protect vital resources such as clean air and water for generations to come.

Results:

  • Coordinating the Upstate Air Quality Advisory Committee and Clean Air Upstate initiative to reduce emissions and stay within federal air quality standards. (Four counties and nearly 20 businesses and organizations have signed the Clean Air Upstate Pledge.)
  • As part of the Clean Air Upstate initiative, have coordinated the increase of Upstate schools participating in the DHEC Breathe Better no-idling program from 14 in 2012 to 33 in 2014
  • Convened meetings of water system directors across the Upstate regarding the South Carolina surface water assessment

The task force is made up of conservation organizations, elected officials, and business and community leaders that care about the Upstate's natural resources. The task force meets two to three times each year.

Upstate Air Quality Advisory Committee
The Upstate's air quality is important for many reasons. Having clean air is essential for the health of Upstate residents, especially those with lung cancer or asthma. It is also important that air quality monitors in the Upstate are at attainment level as there can be a drastic economical impact if the region is designated as a non-attainment area. The Upstate Air Quality Advisory Committee is comprised of conservation and DHEC representatives, utility company representatives, community activists, and business, community, and government leaders who meet two to three times per year.
